Mexico's Independence Day

In September, we celebrate Mexico's Independence Day; it is one of the most important celebrations for the country, the one in which we celebrate our independence from Spain.

The Independence Movement started in a little town called Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, led by the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, also known as "Father of the Independence." On the evening of September 15th, 1810, he called the Mexican people to rebel and break free from the Spaniards rule. Hidalgo's speech was so moving that every year on the night of September 15th, the president steps out into the balcony of the Government Palace located in the "Zocalo" (main plaza) of Mexico City and gives "the cry." As the president rings the bell, he yells the same words that Hidalgo spoke.

Then all the people standing below yell in return, Viva Mexico!

Independence Day celebration is a tribute to all the people who gave their lives, and it's thanks to them that we have a free and sovereign nation.
